The Mayor of Bristol, Marvin Rees

The Mayor

Marvin Rees was first elected mayor in May 2016, becoming the first directly elected mayor of black African heritage in a major European city. He describes becoming mayor as another expression of a deeper commitment to building a fairer, more inclusive world. Marvin was re-elected in May 2021.

“Bristol is a city of culture, creativity, sustainability, advanced manufacturing, world class universities, and aerospace. We are a city that justifiably prides itself in doing things differently and makes a net contribution to the Treasury.

“But we are also a city of contrast, contradiction and inequality, where wealth lives alongside poverty, and hope lives alongside hopelessness.

“As Mayor it is my job to advance our city’s successes. But it’s also my role as a city leader to ensure we understand that our true greatness will be found in our collective commitment to making Bristol a city in which everyone can find hope in that success, irrespective of the circumstances of their birth.

“Our city’s ambitious vision, set out in the One City Plan launched in 2019, is for Bristol to be a fair, healthy, and sustainable city – a city of hope and aspiration where everyone can share in its success.

Bristol One City brings together a huge range of public, private, voluntary and education sector partners within Bristol to work together on city challenges and set out long-term ambitions for our city.

“Our plan has a vision for each decade and shared goals which fall under six priority themes. By 2050, Bristol will be a well-connected city with world-class infrastructure and services.

“But we cannot deliver this vision on our own. Collaboration and alignment from long-term partners, who can see the opportunity provided by investing in our city, are essential to realising our ambitions.

“We are committed to both developing and maintaining a talent pool with the right knowledge and skills and to ensuring your investment is part of long-term success.

“There is space at the table for those who share our values.”
