Research and Development

Bristol is a city of ideas and innovation, with a distinctive strength in turning research into enterprise.

The city specialises in knowledge‑intensive innovation across life sciences, quantum technologies, Artificial Intelligence, robotics, creative technologies and advanced computing.

Both the University of Bristol and UWE Bristol sit at the heart of this ecosystem, working closely with business to translate research into real‑world applications and supporting a strong culture of learning that underpins the city’s high levels of graduate skills.

Bristol Temple Quarter (BTQ) is emerging as Bristol’s focal point for innovation, learning and enterprise — bringing together research capability, incubation space and commercial development in a highly connected city‑centre location.

Bristol anchors a wider regional innovation system, linking the city’s research and start‑up base with nationally significant research and development and engineering activity in advanced manufacturing, aerospace and composites across the West of England.

Research and innovation developed in Bristol connects into large‑scale industrial deployment through UK and international supply chains, including aerospace and advanced manufacturing activity involving firms such as Airbus, Rolls‑Royce and GKN.

In high‑tech and life sciences, Bristol‑based research, talent and early‑stage enterprise feed into national programmes, clinical networks and technology markets, reinforcing the city’s role as a source of ideas, skills and applied innovation with reach well beyond the region.

Sector voice

“Bristol is a city of two halves – with economic, social and historical challenges that need addressing.  There’ll always be challenges but it is how Bristol engages with them that make this the best city in the world for me.

Creativity and pursuit of innovation are in the DNA of this city and her people. There is enterprise everywhere and Bristolians are always experimenting with new ideas to make life better”.
