Social Economy

Bristol has one of the UK’s strongest social‑purpose and community‑led economies, with hundreds of charities, community interest companies, social enterprises, co‑operatives and mission‑driven creative organisations operating across the city.

These organisations deliver social care, youth services, community development, cultural programmes, social investment and neighbourhood‑based regeneration.

The sector includes nationally recognised organisations such as the Quartet Community Foundation, Bristol and Bath Regional Capital, and Rising Arts Agency — all part of a wider ecosystem that places social value and equity at the heart of Bristol’s economic identity.

Bristol’s social economy adds depth and resilience to the city’s economic offer, supporting inclusive growth and innovation in service delivery.

For partners, funders and mission‑driven investors, it offers established institutions, strong networks and opportunities to scale impact alongside commercial activity.

Sector Voice

“Together, Bristol’s Economic Strategy and the One City Plan provide an opportunity to be explicit about the kind of city we aim to become. They commit to inclusive growth, connected communities, equitable life chances, and climate action. Delivering on these missions requires growth that is rooted in place, shaped with communities, and measured by its impact on those most marginalised. The VCSE sector brings deep relationships and community trust that can unlock the agency and innovation essential to turning this ambition into reality – not simply as service providers, but as strategic partners in building an impact economy that works for all.”
